After I was done having kiddos, I was determined to get back into pre-pregnancy shape. I thought that running would be the best (and by that I mean the fastest) way to do it. But not having run in 2 or 3 years, I was slapped with the reality that it was going to be a lot harder than I thought. Luckily I had another mom friend just like me who was committed to getting back in shape.
And thank goodness for her because I would have never accomplished this goal on my own. We both knew that at 5:30am three mornings a week one of us would be waiting for the other coffee in hand to drive to our local gym. Without her, I would have hit the snooze button 6 times before turning the alarm off all together. I call her my Accountability Workout Buddy.
Since that time, I still run with and have developed a deep friendship with my Accountability Workout Buddy, but I have also gained several other types of workout buddies along the way. Each of them serves a different purpose in my health and fitness goals. My Motivational Workout Buddy for example is a friend that is always a little faster and a little stronger than I am. Every workout with her I strive to keep up and push myself that much harder. This type of motivation takes me outside of my comfort zone and continues to challenge me. As much as it hurts to work out with her, I know that I get a little better every time.
Most of us (whether we want to admit it or not) have a competitive side to us. A little friendly competition is great when it comes to working out. Over the years of getting into shape, I have acquired several Competitive Workout Buddies that keep pushing me forward. If she can increase her resistance, I can increase mine. If she’s using a 20lb dumbbell, you bet I will be too. If she can go just one more mile, so can I.
The last and possibly the most important Workout Buddy for me is my Healthy Diet Buddy. Any time I set a goal pertaining to a diet I enlist her help. Whether the goal is to complete a cleanse, cut out alcohol or sugar, increase protein, etc. she is instrumental in my success. We shop together, prepare meals for the week together and most importantly keep each other on track. Like a sponsor, she’s the one I call when I’m tempted to make a bad decision and will give me the pep talk I need to stay committed. And best of all, we get to celebrate our victories together.
One of the many benefits of group fitness classes is that these workout buddies are practically built in. When you have people you workout with on a regular basis you get to know them on a deeper level. They help keep you accountable for showing up to class, push you past any plateaus with friendly competition, and encourage you to reach your fitness goals; all without intimidation.
Like so many other things in life, it “takes a village” to be successful. So why go it alone? The best way to see any goal through is with a big network of support. Now’s the time to find your Accountability Workout Buddy, your Motivational Workout Buddy, your Competitive Workout Buddy, and your Healthy Diet Buddy. Chances are, they need you just as much as you need them.
